August Birthstone Claddagh Necklace

SKU: JL4055

This sterling silver pendant, with its slender lines, miniature accent beads, and glinting diamonds, looks nearly weightless at the end of its chain. The hands of the Claddagh reach outward and down to grasp a peridot heart topped by a celebratory crown. The green of the stone signals an August birthday, the birthday of either the wearer or someone she holds dear.

Perhaps the most popular version of the Claddagh legend tells of a young man named Richard Joyce who left behind his loved one in Galway, Ireland in the late 1600s to become a servant in the West Indies. On his journey to his new role, he was kidnapped by pirates, who sold him to a goldsmith. Joyce spent years enslaved, but developed into a skilled craftsman under the guidance of his master. When he was released from servitude, Joyce returned to Galway to find, joyously, that his loved one was still waiting for him. He fashioned the first Claddagh ring for her in a vow of affection and fidelity. The hands of the symbol represent friendship; the heart, love; and the crown, loyalty.

Handcrafted in Ireland, this pendant is also hallmarked at the Assay Office in Dublin Castle. This pendant is beautifully boxed for gift-giving.
